Wplus9 Birthday Celebration: Trend Watch

I'm so in love with Dawn's new stamp designs this month. Birthday cards are my thing. I make homemade birthday cards for all my family and friends, and I love having a stash ready to choose from when I'm in a time crunch. (And as a mom of 4 littles, I feel like my entire life is a time crunch!) I absolutly love the versilitily of her stamps. They can easily be made to look very modern and graphic, masculine and bold, or girly and vintage.

This week, Dawn asked us to focus on a current trend. I actually have a few in my card, but the main trend I wanted to focus on is combining graphic patterns with vintage florals. I love this style in home decor, fashion, and now in CARD making!!

Other trends that I've noticed in Cardmaking is a helter-skelter cardstock block on top of the cardstock base. (Love!) And, chevron still seems to be holding on strong this season. I also brought in some metallics. Mine just so happen to be gold and sparkly - two things I totally adore!
To make this card, start with a cardstock base. I am using Wplus9's Oatmeal Cardstock, but it really won't show, so pick your favorite. I overlaid a floral patterned paper, and then layered a black and cream chevron paper over that. (Both from Crate Paper.)

I was going to stop there with the layering; I am usually a minimalist (CAS) card maker by nature, but I've been trying to push myself out of my comfort zone. So, why not? One more layer of Oatmeal Cardstock that had been stamped with the new Wplus9 adorable stamp set Just Geometrics: Triangles in pink and charcoal ink.

I used the FABULOUS, new Birthday Basics Die set to cut out two different tones of the sentiment "BIRTHDAY," layered them over each other just slightly offset, and angled them across the front of the card. Then, using the Everyday Alpha set, I stamped out "HAPPY" on Oatmeal Cardstock, cut out the little sentiment, and attached it horizontally above the birthday die cutout. v

Next, using American Craft's gold, sparkly Thickers, I added "2u." beneath the cutouts, and then randomly put come "confetti" from the Thickers set around the card.

And voilĂ ! A pretty, easy, trendy card!

Wplus9 Birthday Celebration: Step It Up

Like every release, Dawn from WPlus9 hit this one out of the park! I'm always craving a good birthday stamp set, and she designed one of the most versitile ones out there! I absolutly love the adorable balloons and coordinating dies. And the "happy" dies make me so.....happy! Seriously. They are adorable. Easy to use. Perfect.

But what makes this release even more special!? WPlus9 is celebrating it's 4th birthday! So we want YOU to participate to win these amazing products!! Head over to the WPlus9 Blog to get all the details!

This week's challenge is all about dimension! I think that dimension is critical to a good card design, so I tend to use it on almost every card I create. It takes a fairly simple card to the next level!
This card was made on a light yellow cardstock base. Next, using a border die from Spellbinders, I cut out a turquoise felt border and adhered it to the bottom of the card. Layered over the border, I placed a White Cardstock block that I had stamped using the adorable stars from the Borders & Backgrounds 3 stamp set. (LOVE that set!!) By the way...have I ever mentioned that the WPlus9 cardstock is the absolute BEST?!

With a square cut from the same felt, I used the new Whole Lotta' Happy Die set to cut out a star from the center and then a smaller star to place in the center. I used one of the dies from the Happy Trio Die set to cut out a "happy" sentiment in Sweet Gelato Cardstock. I adhered the sentiment to the bottom of the white cardstock block using foam adhesive.
Using the ADORABLE new Whole Lotta' Happy stamp set and the Whole Lotta' Happy Die set, I cut and stamped balloons in yellow, purple, pink and green ink. I adhered them to the card using foam adhesive and then tied some pink and white baker's twine for the balloon strings. To finish off the card, I stamped a "Birthday Wishes" sentiment from the Whole Lotta' Happy stamp set in black to the bottom right corner of the card.

I can't wait to see what ya'll create! Head over to the WPlus9 Blog to see how you can win!!

Young Woman's Handout: Why do we have adversity?

As a member of the LDS church, we all have "callings" in different areas of the church. I am a Miamaid advisor, or a teacher of the 14-15 year olds. Today, I taught about why we have adversity. It was a very touching lesson, and I loved studying and learning from the scriptures and conference talks assigned.

One part of the lesson suggests that we talk about the Provo tabernacle that burned. Though the Lord didn't start the fire, he also didn't stop it. He knew that through this fire, the beautiful building would become something more. 10 months later, President Monson announced that the beautiful tabernacle would be restored into a temple. I remember gasping at the announcement.

Much like the temple, we too have times of trial. Times where we feel like we are being burned down. Through those trials, we learn to be better people. More humble. More faithful. More trusting.

I drew this temple based on a sketch of the Provo Tabernacle/Temple by an counselor in our YW Presidency (Saren Johnson) and made a handout of it. I hope some of you will be able to use it as well.

**Edited to add: I had a request to have a more masculine option, so here is one for the boys:

Wplus9 December 2013 Release Day 5: Group Post Day

Today is the final day of the December Wplus9 release, and I am so in love with these stamps! I think everyone needs these in their stamp collection.

I love the Coming up Roses, Fresh Cut Wreaths, Valentine's Wishes, but most of all, I love More Fresh Cuts set. I love building the stamps and the watercolor, whimsical feel of them.

For this card, I layered several on the left side of the card and then used glitter over the darker parts of the flower. I love the way it turned out. I then attached dark charcoal gems, and then stamped the sentiment in a charcoal ink.

Hurry over to the Wplus9 website and order these gorgeous sets. You need them in your life!

Wplus9 December 2013 Release Day 3

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; crafting with flowers is my favorite! And the WPlus9 new stamp set, Coming Up Roses, is perfectly gorgeous and fun!

For this first card, I wanted to do a flower bouquet on the bottom left corner of the card. I used three shades of pink/red for the roses and sentiment (WPlus9 Cranberry Crush, Colorbox Lipstick Red, and Colorbox Rouge), and three shades of green for the leaves (Colorbox Lime Pastel, Colorbox Ice Jade and Colorbox Olive Pastel.) I love the way these stamps layer and look once they are done! I stamped everything on the Wplus9 Oatmeal Cardstock and the background is the cardstock Sweet Gelato.

This second card is another one layer wonder! I absolutely LOVE one layer cards with Dawn's designs. I used the same Happy Birthday sentiment from the More Fresh Cuts stamp set that I used in first card. (Is anyone else always in desperate need for Birthday cards? And this sentiment is so cute!) I stamped the adorable vase in Wplus9 Lake House ink. (Gorgeous color! You don't own it?! You SHOULD!) I then stamped the stems of the flowers in Colorbox Chestnet Roan, and layered the blooms in Colorbox Wisteria and Colorbox Pink Pastel.

All in all, this Wplus9 Coming Up Roses stamp set is one of my very favorites! I think that you all need this in your stamp collection!

Wplus9 December 2013 Release Day 2

I am absolutely in love with Wplus9's Valentine's and Floral sets that are coming out with this new release. On the day that I received the package, I was so blown away and immediately texted Dawn to let her know.

My favorite cards are one layer cards. I love their simplicity. But, with a lot of stamps, one layer cards look like they're missing something. With these amazing stamps, however, you can totally make a one layer card that has interest and completion. They're so fabulous. Seriously. Dawn is a genius. And you need these sets!!

By the way…I totally missed out on Day 1 because of camera issues, but I'll make up for it by doing an extra day on the release. Stay tuned and check back!

With this first card, I stamped my own background. I love building backgrounds with Dawn's stamps and making a card that is truly one of a kind.

Don't you just love the fonts of those sentiments? So beautiful!
This is my one layer card. You may or may not be seeing several of these in this release. I couldn't help myself. The stamps are just so simple and stunning all on their own.
